The innovative technology recognized with this award is the “Organic Chelate Bead-Type Adsorbent Material for Valuable Metal Recovery.”

The five most important core metal materials in Korea are lithium, cobalt, tungsten, nickel, and manganese.
In addition, twelve other key metals of interest include rare earth elements, tantalum, molybdenum, indium, platinum group metals, chromium, niobium, silicon, magnesium, gallium, and vanadium.

Among these, valuable metals such as gold, platinum, lithium, indium, gallium, and palladium are high-value and useful metals widely used in semiconductors,

LEDs, PCs, smart devices, automotive batteries, exhaust gas purification catalysts, and petrochemical refining catalysts.

As the demand for these metals continues to increase and most valuable metals rely heavily on imports, technologies for recovering valuable metals from waste home appliances, spent batteries,

and used catalysts are becoming increasingly important.

Various methods are used to recover valuable metals, including co-precipitation, flotation, solvent extraction, bioaccumulation, and adsorption methods.
Among these, the adsorption method is widely recognized as the most economical and efficient approach for recovering large quantities of valuable metals.
Currently, commonly used adsorbents include inorganic adsorbent materials such as zeolites and aluminosilicates, as well as organic adsorbent materials such as ion exchange resins.
While inorganic adsorbents have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, they tend to have lower adsorption performance.
As a result, organic adsorbent materials such as ion exchange resins with superior adsorption performance are increasingly being used.

However, conventional ion exchange resins rely on a single adsorption function through functional groups,

such as sulfonic acid groups or amine groups modified onto polystyrene resins, which results in limitations in adsorption performance.

To overcome these limitations, INWOO Corporation, which has been developing and commercializing ion exchange resins, successfully developed the world’s first organic chelate bead-type adsorbent material

with a porous structure and modified functional groups, providing dual adsorption functionality.

The company’s CEO stated: “Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis, we have continued to invest significant company-wide efforts into developing technologies and products

that respond to and lead global concerns about climate change and environmental issues.

By further advancing our previously developed ion exchange resin technology,
we were able to develop the world’s first highly economical and highly efficient organic chelate bead-type adsorbent material for valuable metal recovery.”

The CEO also emphasized:

“By enabling the recovery of high-value metals that are currently heavily dependent on imports,

this technology can significantly reduce costs for companies producing future strategic products, thereby strengthening national competitiveness.”

Inwoo Corporation added that it will continue to strengthen its commitment to research and development and pursue further growth with the dedication of all employees in the coming year.

Please look forward to an even more advanced INWOO Corporation in 2022.
